As believers we should be living questionable lives. This idea caught me off guard as I was readingĀ 5 Habits of Highly Missional People by Michael Frost until it was explained.

If all believers are leading the kind of lives that evoke questions from their friends, then opportunities for faith sharing abound.

As a believer, I need to be living every aspect of my life in a way that will cause others to ask questions. Because when questions are asked, conversations are started and conversations are signs of open minds (and often open hearts) which gives the Holy Spirit a lot more room to work.

In the New Testament, we see the believers living questionable lives. They loved with the unconditional love of God rather than the conditional love of the world. They broke down social barriers between male & female, slave & free, Jew & Gentile while the world was still caught up in positions, titles & rank. The early church was “literally the most surprising alternative society and their conduct raised an insatiable curiosity among the average Roman.”

If people can become curious about God, He will answer their curiosity. And I think if we lived our lives in a way that would cause people to ask questions this will do several things:

1) We will be able to use every aspect of our lifestyles to point to God.
2) People will become curious about God (even if they don’t realize it).
3) People will be more open to hearing about God because they will have started the conversation with their own question stemming from their own curiosity.
4) It will start a conversation. Usually, people don’t ask just one question. There are usually followup questions involved which turn into conversations which will open room for the Holy Spirit (especially as he speaks through you). And when there’s room for the Holy Spirit, big things happen!

I think the church also needs to live & operate questionably. Unfortunately I don’t think all the traditional outreaches the churches are involved in spark curiosity any more. The church needs to get a little creative and figure out ways to reach those in their communities in unexpected ways that get people’s attention, pique their curiosity & get people asking questions. Some already have. Some are starting to head that direction. But one of the biggest ways starts with you and me.

As the body of Christ and as evangelistic believers, we need to be living questionable lives.

If we’re trying to live questionable lives, then cutting the lawn, saying hi to the neighbors, washing our car, walking the dog and driving to the office every day is hardly an intriguing lifestyle.

We need the impetus to propel us outward into the lives of our neighbors, but also upward into deeper intimacy with Jesus.

We need to become a godly, intriguing, socially adventurous, joyous presence in the lives of others.

I want to become a godly, intriguing, socially adventurous, joyous presence in the lives of others. I want everything about my life to point to God. I want my life to start conversations about God. I want my lifestyle choices to open doors to share Christ’s love with people.

I don’t know exactly what that looks like in my life just yet. I’m open to suggestions and ideas but this is definitely something I’ll be exploring over the next few weeks and months as I figure out what it means for me to be a godly, intriguing, socially adventurous, joyous presence in the lives of others.
