This past week I led a team to Casa Hogar. This is my third time being able to visit with these kids. My first time was in 2008 when I lived at the orphanage for several weeks and then my second time was in 2010 for 5 days. This time was for seven. Here is the group with the kids…
Even though this was my third time, I still learned many things and I’d like to share just a few of those with you…
1) I missed Twitter. But I didn’t miss Facebook. I kept thinking of so many things to tweet about but never once did I think of something I wished I could post to Facebook. #sorryfacebook
2) Angry Birds is an internationally known game. I had my ipod out showing the kids some pictures of my family (which turned out to be all of avery…whoops) and of course they wanted to see what games I had. I thought they’d like Angry Birds so I brought it up and was getting ready to show them how to play when one of the kids got really excited. He already knew how to play.
3) Roosters don’t crow when the sun comes up. Well they do. But they also crow at night, in the afternoon, in the evening. Basically they crow ALL. THE. TIME. Here is what a typical night sounds like…(this was taken about 4:30am)

4) Just like God’s love, people’s love for Justin Bieber knows no language barrier. The kids at the orphanage definitely have Bieber Fever! Below is them singing Baby (keep in mind these kids don’t know English…so they sing what they hear)

5) You don’t need words to show love. A big hangup for people is the langauge barrier. But there is no language barrier when it comes to showing love. These kids have a pretty rough background when it comes to families. Most have gotten little to no attention and love (some still receive none from their parents) or have been shown a false love. So one of the things these kids need the most is love. They just need to be loved on. There is only so much love the few people who work there can give. 2 of the girls who went didn’t speak Spanish at all and yet they were still able to show love to these kids. Wether it’s just sitting with them or listening to them read or even simply holding a hand or putting an arm around them, that’s what they need. They need to see love. Not necessarily hear it. They need to feel that they are loved. Words are not necessary for love to be seen or felt.
So my challenge for you is to keep this in mind in your day to day life. Even though we all share the same language here, remember, people can still see love through your actions. So be mindful of how you interact with those around you: the tone you use, the actions you take, and the looks you give because that is how you show God’s love.
[There is so much more I want to share with you guys about what happened but I thought this would be a good start!]
another A+ post. LOVE IT! Especially #’s 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. 😀
Great first post! You are right there is so much more to say, but that is a good start.
