Every Christmas for the past few years in the States, it seems there’s always a somewhat major controversy over whether you should say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. I grew up saying Merry Christmas so I still say Merry Christmas. But seriously. You aren’t sharing the whole meaning of Christmas when you say Merry Christmas.
But in Albania, I had a revelation when I had lunch out the other day and got a coke. It came in a can like this.
It says “Happy Holidays.”
This makes sense to me because like .1% of the population here celebrates Christmas. Why would Coca-Cola put Merry Christmas on a can when half the people here don’t know what Christmas is. That is one great thing about the Christmas season here. It gives plenty of opportunities to share about Jesus and our need for him and the love he has for us because many people don’t have any idea.
I’m not sure if the debate is still going on in the States today but people hear Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, etc etc all the time. That’s not really what people need to hear. They need to hear about God’s love for us. They need to hear God’s love in our voices, in our actions, in our lives.
So Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! (Or as Lucie says Happy Christmas!)
