I think a lot of people struggle with who we were or who we are at this exact moment when really, we need to be worrying about who we are becoming. Are. Becoming. as in -ing. In the English world we refer to that as present progressive. That’s fancy talk for using a verb tense that describes an ongoing action that is happening now.
So yes who we are right now is a part of who we are becoming. But there’s more to it than just who you are today. It is a process that starts right now and continues into the future.
Ok spoiler alert. We are going to make mistakes. We are going to make mistakes that will make us not like who we are. But because Jesus came and died for the mistakes He knew we would make, we can move past them and focus on where we are going. Focus on who we are becoming. Who He wants us to become. We have a chance to be remade.
Easter comes only once a year but the effects that is has on us should impact us on a daily basis. Jesus died so we could forget about our past and have a future with Him. He died so we could forget about who we are right now and focus on who He wants us to become. If we work on being who He wants us to become, then who we are today won’t be a problem.
There is a song by Tenth Avenue North that reminds us that we are more than who we were or the mistakes we made today or the problems we face right now. We are more because of what Jesus did for us. The video is at the end of this post but I want you to read some of the lyrics first. They are pretty powerful.
This is not about what you’ve done,
But what’s been done for you.
This is not about where you’ve been,
But where your brokenness brings you toThis is not about what you feel,
But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved. You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.
To Jesus, you are more. He doesn’t care about who you were or what you did. He cares about who you are becoming through Him.
Because Jesus died and defeated death, you’ve been remade.
You’ve been remade to be more than any mistake you have ever made.
Like the new look and I love, love, love that song!!
